Adeline's Nursery

We've posted a bunch of photos of this room in various stages of completion, but here it is in it's most recent and final stage.

Our theme for our little girl’s room was “woodland” and we incorporated that with various stuffed animals (foxes, owls, etc.) as well as some of the prints which were from etsy. But before we got started on the decorating, we pulled up the carpet and refinished the hardwood floors as well as painted over the dingy/dirty/ugly tan wall paper.

We wanted the room to be feminine for our little girly, but we didn't want a pink Pepto Bismol explosion. To combat the inevitable pink we brought in oranges and yellows, all in sherbet tones.

The best before/after in the room is the dresser which was $7 at a thrift store but it had really old and ugly yellow paint and a drawer was broken. We painted it glossy white around the tops and sides and the drawers themselves are a gradient of a coral color. Because we only needed a little paint we used the Home Depot $3 paint samples for the drawer fronts. Then, because the sample paint comes in flat sheen only, I sprayed them with a gloss clear spray paint.

We saved a bunch of money by getting most of the items at either IKEA, thrift stores or Craigslist. The room has a nice bright and cheery feel to it and we love playing with our little girl in there. There are some special family touches in the room, including the pennant flag banner made by Auntie, the embroidered squirrel, made by Mom, and the Raggedy Ann, made by Great Grandma.

Status: The Baby's room

The dresser is now complete (the photos I posted earlier were with just white primer).

Baby's nursery just got a little more awesome

After we found these three prints on etsy. As mentioned previous, we've tried to have a woodsy theme to this nursery, foxes do that well:

The Woodland nursery, a beginning

We've begun to actually decorate the baby's nursery in the woodland or "woodsy" theme.

The painted white hutch thing, got some wood grain pattern to the backs of it.

For the wood grain, we were going to use this paper from Paper Source:

But it's not cheap, and shipping nearly doubled the price. note: both Portland and Boston had a Paper Source ----- closest one now is Berkeley.

So instead, wandering the aisles at OSH the other day, we stumbled upon wood grain contact/shelf liner paper for $8:

We were going to use foam core board, but after I saw that it was $3 a sheet and each sheet would do one section ($3 x 5 = $15) I began to rethink and remembered that Home Depot sells jumbo moving boxes. One large moving box later ($1.39) and we had the boards to mount the shelf liner paper to.

Baby dresser: before and after

Got the baby's room nearly painted (just need to do the back of the door) so I moved the furniture back in there.

Here on the left is the baby's dresser in the conceptual stage after some photoshopping ---- was cool to use Photoshop to edit the color 20 different ways until Rachel and I settled on something we liked. On the right, the dresser nearly done being painted:

As a reminder, here is the dresser when we got it home and also this is the photo I used to create the photoshopped image in the above left --- yes it was yellow:

Painting progress

I spent most of the entire day Friday painting the baby's room.As mentioned before, we settled on "Custard Cream" from Behr. The downside is that its light enough that it doesn't cover in one coat though.

 Took the old almond fixtures out and replaced with new white ones ---- cant have white trim with almond outlets. Yes there is wallpaper under this paint, not sure when we'll have to tear it all down. Hopefully not soon. It has bubbled up in a couple of spots and torn in a few others.

Now, I'm working on finishing painting the baseboards and door in white.

This is tough

We've had to hem and haw every time we picked a wall color (except the guest room where we just matched the existing). Usually, this means we buy like 2 samples, then another 2 and then decide between the four.

The baby's room has been tougher though (notice the pink in the far right too):

However, I think we've actually settled on a Behr color called "Custard Cream". Luckily, Home Depot sells small samples for only $2.94.

Note: Not shown is that we tried the living room color "cornerstone" in here as well. No luck.

The Baby's room floors are done

Spent last Sunday sanding the floors in the baby's room. Rented a floor sander from Home Depot and used it for about 2 hours, returned it, then went around edges on hands and knees with small orbital sander. Then, added 3 coats of Kelly Moore Kel-Thane II in semi-gloss

Baby rocker

We got this chair for the baby's room on Friday off of Craigslist for $150. It rocks, reclines and swivels. It originally came from Goores (a high-end baby store here in Sacramento that's now going out of business) and originally sold for over $500.

Rachel's already taken a nap or two in it, but it looks like Olive is the biggest fan, she wouldn't get out of it all weekend.

Here is a photo in the daylight of the light for the baby's room as referenced earlier. I might add a spacer so that it hangs a little lower, not sure it looks good right up against the ceiling:

Unidentified Flying Object (light)

We found this glass lampshade at the thrift store on Sunday for a top-dollar price of $20. Seriously, that's kind of a lot for a thrift store, but we thought it'd look great in the baby girl's room.

It's very hard to take nice photos of lights, and I'll try to post a better one in the future, but until then, here it is:

 

Between the "panes" of glass its brass colored. I think this thing was originally supposed to hang the opposite direction, but by flipping it upside down it looks more art deco than 1980's. I needed to get a new light from the hardware store ($8) and then used this cover instead of the one that came with the light: 

The Baby's dresser

We got this today from a local thrift store. A track was missing for one of the drawers but for $7.50 it was a deal. Tonight I replaced the track with some scrap. Paint to come!
